How the fixtures are made

The generator uses the circle method, the standard way to draw a round robin. Everyone meets everyone else exactly once, and nobody plays twice on the same night.

With an odd number of entries, one player or team sits out each matchday. The bye moves round so everyone has exactly one.

Choose how many rounds to play: one round means everyone meets everyone once. Home and away are balanced: within a round nobody has more than one home match more than away matches, and every second round repeats the first with home and away swapped, so over two rounds everyone has the same number of each.

Choose how many boards you have and each matchday is split into goes, so you can see at a glance how long a league night will take.

How long will the season be?

Matchdays and matches for the most common league sizes. One matchday is usually one league night.

Questions about league fixtures

How many matches are in a round robin with 8 players?

28. Each of the 8 players meets the other 7 once, over 7 matchdays of 4 matches. Over two rounds, home and away, it is 56 matches on 14 matchdays.

What happens with an odd number of players?

One player has a bye each matchday. With 7 players there are 7 matchdays of 3 matches, and every player sits out exactly once.

Should we play everyone once or twice?

Once suits a short season or a big league. Twice, home and away, is fairer because everyone throws first and plays at home as often as away, and it fills a winter season for 8 to 10 teams.

Does it work for pairs and team leagues?

Yes. Type team names instead of players. The first named team is the home side, which in a team league usually means the venue.

Do I need an account?

No. The generator runs in your browser and the names never leave your device. You only need a free TallyPally account if you want to score the league live and have the table update itself.

Can I change the order of the draw?

Yes. Shuffle the draw for a random order. Otherwise the order you add the names in sets the draw: the first name plays the second on matchday 1.
