How to Choose Your Darts

Barrel Material

The barrel is the part you grip. Material determines the dart's thickness at a given weight.

  • Tungsten (wolfram) — The standard for serious players. Higher % = slimmer barrel at same weight. 80–90% tungsten is the sweet spot for most players.
  • Nickel silver — A mid-range option. Thicker than tungsten but more affordable. Good for beginners.
  • Brass — The cheapest option. Barrels are noticeably thick and bulky. Fine for occasional play but not ideal for tight grouping.

Weight

Dart weight is a personal preference, but there are common ranges.

  • Steel tip — Most players use 22–26g. Heavier darts (24–26g) are more forgiving of technique errors. Lighter darts (18–22g) need cleaner technique.
  • Soft tip — Typically 16–20g due to electronic board limitations.
  • Try multiple weights — The only way to know is to throw them. This is why visiting a physical store matters.

Barrel Shape & Grip

The shape and texture of the barrel affect how you hold and release the dart.

  • Straight barrel — Uniform thickness. Versatile, allows you to grip anywhere along the barrel.
  • Torpedo/bomb shape — Thicker at the front, tapers to the back. Front-weighted, often preferred by players who grip near the center of gravity.
  • Scallop barrel — Has indentations for finger placement. Helps with consistent grip.
  • Grip patterns — Range from smooth to heavily knurled (ringed). More grip helps in humid conditions or if your hands get sweaty, but too much grip can cause the dart to stick to your fingers on release.

Flights

Flights stabilize the dart in the air. Shape and size affect how the dart flies.

  • Standard (wide) — Most stable, best for beginners. The dart flies in a more arced trajectory.
  • Slim/Kite — Less air resistance, faster and flatter trajectory. Better for tighter grouping once your technique is consistent.
  • Material matters — Nylon flights last longer than poly. Molded flights (like L-Style or Cosmo Fit) snap in and don't fall off.
  • Flights are cheap — Experiment freely. Buy several shapes and see what works.

Shafts (Stems)

The shaft connects the barrel to the flight. Length and material affect the dart's balance.

  • Short shafts — Move the center of gravity forward. The dart flies flatter. Better for players with a strong, direct throw.
  • Medium/long shafts — More stability, the dart arcs more. Forgiving for beginners.
  • Nylon — Cheap and flexible. They bend instead of breaking, but wear out over time.
  • Aluminium — Rigid and lightweight. Can shatter on impact ("robin-hooding"). Use with flight protectors.
  • Spinning shafts — The flight rotates to reduce deflections when darts land close together.

Tips (Points)

For steel tip darts, the point type affects how well the dart sticks to the board.

  • Standard smooth points — The default. Work well for most players and boards.
  • Grooved/knurled points — Grip the board fibers better, reducing bounce-outs. Can wear out sisal boards faster.
  • Point length — Standard is 32mm. Longer points (36–41mm) shift weight forward slightly.
  • Replaceable vs. fixed — Most quality darts have replaceable points. If a point bends, you can swap it rather than replacing the whole dart.
