Round-Robin Tournament

Learn how round-robin tournaments work in darts. Everyone plays everyone — the fairest format for determining the best player.

Quick Answer

In a round-robin tournament, every player plays against every other player. The player with the most wins (or best leg difference) is the champion. It's the fairest format but takes the most time.

What Is Round-Robin?

A round-robin tournament is where every player plays against every other player in the group. It's considered the fairest format because one bad match doesn't eliminate you — consistency across all matches determines the winner.

How It Works

Each player plays one match against every other player. Results are recorded in a standings table ranked by wins, then leg difference.

  • Total matches = n × (n-1) / 2 (e.g., 6 players = 15 matches)
  • Standings ranked by: 1) wins, 2) leg difference, 3) head-to-head
  • Every player gets equal playing time
  • Best for groups of 4–8 players
  • Can be split into groups for larger numbers

Pros and Cons

Round-robin is the gold standard for fairness, but it requires more time and matches.

  • Pro: Fairest format — everyone plays everyone
  • Pro: One bad game doesn't ruin your tournament
  • Pro: Every player gets maximum playing time
  • Con: Takes significantly more time than cup format
  • Con: Not practical for large groups (20+ players)

Tips for Organizers

Running a smooth round-robin requires good scheduling:

  • Keep group sizes at 4–6 players for manageable scheduling
  • Use 2 dartboards if available to run matches in parallel
  • Consider best-of-3 legs to keep matches short
  • Display the standings table after each round to build excitement
  • For 8+ players, split into two groups with a playoff between group winners
