How the draw works

The order of your list is the seeding: number 1 is the top seed. In a knockout the seeds are placed so that the top two can only meet in the final and the top four not before the semi-finals. Shuffle the list for a random draw.

When the number of players is not 4, 8, 16, 32 or 64, the bracket is filled with byes. The byes go to the top seeds, who go straight into the second round.

In groups + knockout, players are dealt into the groups back and forth, so every group gets one of the top seeds and the groups are as even as possible. Everyone in a group plays everyone else once or twice.

With the top two going through, each group winner meets the runner-up of a neighbouring group (A1 v B2, B1 v A2), and two winners from neighbouring groups can only meet again in the final. Add a third-place match if you want a full podium.

How many matches?

A straight knockout always has one match fewer than there are players, because every match knocks out one player.

Questions about tournament draws

How do byes work in a darts tournament?

A knockout needs 4, 8, 16, 32 or 64 places. With 12 players the bracket has 16 places, so 4 are byes. The top four seeds get them and go straight into the second round.

How many matches are in a 16-player knockout?

15: eight in the first round, four quarter-finals, two semi-finals and the final. With a third-place match it is 16.

How should I split 16 players into groups?

Four groups of four with the top two going through is the classic format: 24 group matches, then quarter-finals, semi-finals and the final, 31 matches in all. Everyone is guaranteed three matches.

Can I seed the best players?

Yes. Add the players in order of strength: the first name is the top seed. The draw keeps the top seeds apart until the later rounds.

Do I need an account?

No. The generator runs in your browser and the names never leave your device. You only need a free TallyPally account to score the tournament live and have the groups and the bracket update themselves.

Does it work for pairs and teams?

Yes. Type the pair or team names instead of players. The draw works the same way.
