Double 1 — the dreaded "Madhouse." This tiny sliver on the board, worth just 2 points, has broken hearts and ended dreams in darts matches at every level. It's the lowest double on the board, and ending up on D1 usually means something has gone wrong with your checkout plan. Here's why D1 is so feared: the segment for number 1 is one of the smallest on the board. The double ring is already narrow, and for the 1 segment, it's especially small because the 1 is wedged between the 20 and the 18. Missing D1 on the outside means your dart flies off the board entirely. Missing on the inside gives you single 1, leaving you on 1 — which is an impossible finish (there's no half-point double). You've busted. This is the madhouse scenario: you're stuck on 2, you need D1, but the target is tiny and the consequences of missing are severe. Many players will deliberately try to avoid ending up on 2, routing their checkouts through other numbers to stay on higher, more comfortable doubles. The psychological pressure of D1 is intense. Players can sometimes hit every other double on the board but freeze when facing D1. It becomes a mental block as much as a physical challenge. If you find yourself repeatedly stuck on D1, practice hitting it in low-pressure situations to build confidence. Pro tip: when you're on 2, aim for the very center of the D1 segment. Don't try to be perfect — just get the dart in the right neighborhood and let muscle memory do its work.
