Learn More

A match is the complete contest between two players (or two teams in doubles/team events). While a leg is a single game, the match is the bigger picture — it's what determines who wins and who loses. Matches are structured as "first to X legs" or "best of X legs," and sometimes as "first to X sets" in longer formats. Match formats dramatically affect the nature of competition. Short matches (best-of-3 or best-of-5) are more volatile — a hot start or lucky break can determine the outcome. Longer matches (best-of-9, best-of-11, or even longer) allow quality to prevail, giving the better player more chances to assert themselves. The PDC World Championship final, for example, is best of 13 sets, each set being best of 5 legs — a genuine marathon of darts. Understanding match dynamics is a skill in itself. Knowing when you're in a dominant position and when you need to push harder is tactical awareness. Leading 4-2 in a first-to-5 feels comfortable, but getting complacent is dangerous. Being down 1-4 is tough, but fighting back from the brink creates some of sport's greatest moments. Match preparation matters too. Professional players warm up, check their equipment, and mentally prepare for the specific opponent they'll face. At club level, having a pre-match routine — even just a few minutes of practice throws — can make a real difference to your first-leg performance. The social aspect of a match shouldn't be underestimated. Darts is one of the few individual sports where you're physically close to your opponent throughout, sharing the oche area. Sportsmanship, handshakes, and respect for your opponent are deeply embedded in darts culture.
