The barrel is where darts get personal. It's the part you grip, the part that determines how the dart feels in your hand, and arguably the most important component of any dart. Barrels come in an extraordinary variety of shapes, textures, and weights, and finding the right one is a journey every serious player takes. Most competitive darts use tungsten barrels, with the percentage ranging from 80% to 97%. Higher tungsten content means a denser, thinner barrel — which allows tighter grouping because the darts take up less space on the board. An 80% tungsten barrel is a great starting point and more affordable, while 90%+ is what most professionals use. Barrel shapes matter more than many beginners realize. Straight barrels offer a consistent grip anywhere along the barrel and suit players who like to adjust their grip. Torpedo or bomb-shaped barrels are thicker in the middle and naturally position your fingers in the same spot every time. Scalloped barrels have cut-out sections that guide finger placement. The grip texture — knurled, ringed, razor-cut, or smooth — is equally important. Aggressive grips help if your fingers tend to slip, but they can cause inconsistent releases if you grip too tightly. Smoother barrels reward a lighter, more relaxed grip. When shopping for barrels, hold them in your throwing grip and make practice motions. The dart should feel balanced and secure without you needing to squeeze. Your barrel choice will evolve as your technique develops, so don't be afraid to experiment.
